Writing just seven months before his death, Monroe addresses Nicholas Biddle, President of the Second Bank of the United States, to introduce and recommend a man named Burrows.

"Mr. Burrows who will deliver you this, has expressed a desire that I would introduce him to your acquaintance, according to the knowledge I have of his character, and the impression I entertain of it… While I held the office of Ch. Magistrate, he was introduced to me by a letter from Govr. Wolcott of Connecticut, in very favorable terms, as a citizen of merit and entitled to the attention of the govt. He reminds me that I acted under the influence of that recommendation, and promoted his objects in Europe, in commerce, by letters to public officers then. Within a few years past, our acquaintance has been renewed, and under circumstances which have confirmed, and increased, this impression first made. I am informed, by the best authority here, that he is engaged extensively in commerce, in both hemispheres, the operations of which are well conducted & attended with success. Viewing him in this light, you will pardon this liberty I take, in communicating it to you."

A scarce late-life letter from Monroe, combining presidential reflection, American commercial history, and a direct tie to Nicholas Biddle, one of the most influential figures of the early U.S. financial system.
