This letter typed in German and signed Albert Einstein, bearing his signature "A. Einstein," in black ink. The letter, dated Feb. 16, 1955, is on 8.5 x 11-inch paper with Princeton's blindstamped letterhead. The letter was signed by Einstein a mere short months before he passed away at the age of 76 in April 1955.

Addressed to Mrs. Norden-Lowe, Einstein expresses concern, translated to the best of our ability, stating, "Your letter disturbed me, primarily because I regard Otto Nathan as a friend. Under these circumstances, discussing him or his situation without his knowledge feels uncomfortable. Before I respond, please inform me in writing about the nature of these matters."

Additional background, like Einstein, economist Otto Nathan escaped Nazi Germany and joined Princeton University's faculty, where he developed a friendship with Einstein. Nathan was appointed as the sole executor of Einstein's estate following the scientist's passing in April 1955 and was named co-trustee of his literary estate alongside Einstein's secretary, Helen Dukas. During the McCarthy-era 'Red Scare' of the 1950s, Nathan faced difficulties in securing a passport and was scrutinized by the House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1955, he successfully compelled the State Department through legal action to issue him a passport after affirming he had never been a member of the Communist Party. Given the date of Einstein's letter, it is plausible that the inquiry related to this politically sensitive issue.
